Designing the PV system involves several factors:
- Choosing grid-tie or off-grid application; grid-tie systems require no batteries for solar system design
- Calculating solar irradiation if a given location including any shading factors and selecting the right solar panel design configuration
- Determining based on panel efficiency which panels and modules to use in the solar panel design given limited amount of space
- Determining which inverter(s) to use for grid-tie; number of batteries for off-grid
- Selecting balance of system components which include mounting and racking hardware; AC and DC disconnects; wiring and conduit; and monitoring apparatus for the solar system design
